Designing for Longevity: A Considered Laundry at Hoeve House

Designing for Longevity: A Considered Laundry at Hoeve House

In Surrey Road’s Hoeve House, a former secondary kitchen has been thoughtfully reimagined into a hardworking yet beautifully resolved laundry. Designed by Kaas Interiors, the space balances the demands of a large family with a refined, tactile material palette — proving that even the most practical rooms can feel calm, warm and enduring.

Featuring Castella’s Ridge handles in satin brass, the project demonstrates how carefully selected hardware can quietly elevate everyday rituals.

A Brief Rooted in Real Life

The brief was clear but layered. The family, with four young children, required a laundry capable of supporting multiple loads daily — without allowing the room to feel purely service-driven.

As Lynette explains, “The brief was to transform what had previously been a secondary kitchen into a laundry that could support a large, busy family while still feeling calm and welcoming.”

Function was non-negotiable: two washers, two dryers and a drying cabinet needed to be accommodated. Yet the space also had to feel emotionally aligned with the rest of the home.

Working within an older property presented additional complexity. Once demolition began, uneven walls and traditional construction methods surfaced — details that required thoughtful planning rather than quick fixes. The goal was consistency, ensuring nothing felt overly new or disconnected.

Alignment as a Design Language

One of the project’s quiet strengths lies in its balance and symmetry.

“The joinery is very balanced, linear and purposely lined up with other architectural elements in the room to allow the eye to easily run along the surfaces,” Lynette shares. This deliberate alignment softens the impact of the striking green cabinetry, allowing it to feel grounded rather than dominant.

A warm palette underpins the room: natural marble underfoot, solid timber benchtops and satin brass hardware. These materials introduce tactile richness while maintaining cohesion through consistent undertones.

The result is subtle luxury — not overt, but deeply felt.

Selecting Hardware with Intention

Once the overarching feel was established, the smaller details were selected through the lens of daily use.

“Hardware in particular needed to feel good in the hand, age well, and sit comfortably alongside the other materials,” Lynette explains.

Castella’s Ridge handles in satin brass offered the right balance. The fluted T-bar design bridges classic and contemporary — pairing seamlessly with shaker cabinetry while adding textural depth. The satin brass finish complements the warmth of the green joinery and tapware, reinforcing harmony throughout the space.

In a laundry, hardware is one of the most frequently touched elements. Its role is both practical and atmospheric — contributing to how the space feels over time.

Designing Within Constraint

Function drove many decisions. Housing significant appliances risked pushing the room toward a mechanical feel.

Yet restraint became an asset. Joinery was carefully considered and not overextended, leaving space for styling — an important influence from the homeowner, an interior stylist with a strong appreciation for detail and atmosphere.

As Lynette reflects, the success of the room lies in its equilibrium: “Despite being one of the most used rooms in the house, it doesn’t feel busy or overwhelming.”

The Role of Detail in Longevity

Designing for longevity is less about trend and more about proportion, materiality and quiet consistency.

“Natural materials tend to age more gracefully,” Lynette notes, emphasising the value of marble, timber and solid metal elements. She adds, “Hardware is one of the most frequently used parts of any room. When it feels solid, well-proportioned, and visually resolved, it helps a space age quietly.”

In Hoeve House, the Ridge handles do precisely that — anchoring the joinery with warmth and tactility while reinforcing the home’s broader narrative of balance and timeless design.

Even in the most functional spaces, it is the deliberate details that endure.
